- Story Text: The largest United States plane maker, Boeing, is
planning to lay off up to 30-thousand employees.
The figure represents between 20 and 30 percent of its
commercial airline work force.
The revelation was made on Tuesday (September 18) by
Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Boeing's jet unit who said
that the redundancies were a result of last week's attacks on
the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Roughly 93-thousand people work for Boeing's commercial
airline sector, much of which is centred round the company's
former headquarters in Seattle, Washington state.
The White House and Congress are considering a federal aid
package for the airline industry to help it recover from the
attacks.
It is unclear whether any of the proposed 24 (b) billion
(U-S) dollars would go to Boeing.
