- Story Text: Londoners make their way home, undaunted by the
bombings that killed at least 37 and brought public
transport to a standstill.
Every business day, millions of workers, students
and tourists commute into central London on public
transport.
Many of those people were left stranded when the London
Underground and bus services were shutdown after the series
of bomb attacks on the underground and a bus on Thursday
(July 7) morning wreaked havoc on the city's transport
systems.
Footpaths were packed with those who decided to walk
home, the roads choked with cars and taxis as commuters
found whatever means they could to leave London.
Buses began running again late in the afternoon, but the
passengers who chose to use them, avoided the top deck of
the city's famous double deckers. Police earlier in the
day said it was possible the bomb on the Number 30 bus from
Hackney to Marble Arch was detonated on the upper deck
towards the rear of the bus.
Many people, denied their normal tube home, found
themselves in strange surroundings above ground and needed
map books to work out where they were and how far they had
to go.
Some decided to wait out the crush with a drink at one
of London's many thousands of pubs, sending text messages
home saying they would be late.
For others, life went on as normal, keeping appointments
with the hairdresser - the sheer size of London meant that
some people not far from bomb sites seemed completely
unaffected by the nearby devastation.
