- Story Text: German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder emphasizes
connection between poverty and terrorism.
A day after having returned from the G-8 summit in
Gleneagles, German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder repeated
his announcement of Western countries standing united
against terrorism after the London bombings.
Schroeder said on Saturday (July 9) in Hanover that he
fully supported the decision of the G8 to write off debts
of many African countries and to increase development aid.
Schroeder emphasized there was a strong connection
between poverty and terrorism.
"When I say there is a correlation between one
(poverty) and the other (terrorism), I do not mean that
those terrorists could base themselves on a political
concept. But there are masses of people in the third world,
poor and starving people, who might come to if not to
support but at least to tolerate this kind of terrorism",
said Schroeder after having been elected top candidate of
his Social Democratic party in Lower Saxony for the
upcoming federal election.
