- Story Text: Japan holds a drill aimed at blocking imports and
exports of substances which can be used for nuclear,
biological and chemical weapons.
Japan kicked off a series of anti-terror drills on Friday
(October 22, 2004) as dozens of special police
practiced dealing with discoveries of hazardous materials
which can be used to make nuclear, biological and chemical
weapons.
The exercise started with the discovery of a truck
carrying suspicious materials at Tokyo customs.
The truck was led out into an open lot where police in
chemical and biological suits searched for the illegal
material.
"The NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical weapons)
terrorism unit is one that operates under difficult
circumstances as there is much danger involved and I think
our drills today showed how ready we are," said Isao
Shibano, superintendent of Tokyo Metropolitan Police.
The exercise on Friday is part of the Proliferation
Security Initiative (PSI), hosted this year by Japan.
In the larger-scale drills held next week, vessels and
aircraft of Australia, France, the United States and Japan
will conduct law enforcement activities in Sagami Bay near
Tokyo.
The exercise is meant to improve proficiency in
boarding and inspecting suspicious vessels.
PSI exercises have been conducted 11 times already in
various regions of the world.
