- Story Text: Gunmen fired gunshots and attacked a police station with a hand grenade in the Greek capital of Athens on Tuesday (February 3), the third attack on police in two months. Detectives believe the attack could be the work of an urban guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Struggle.
There were no injuries in the early morning attack after the bullets struck the wall of the station and the grenade did not explode.
Army soldiers removed the grenade from the police station as investigators from the counter-terrorist unit swept the site for evidence.
At least three assailants were involved in the attack, two used automatic weapons and a third threw the grenade, before they escaped, police said.
The Revolutionary Struggle was responsible for an attack in December outside a government ministry. One police officer was shot and seriously injured. It happened in the area where a 15-year-old was killed by a police officer on December 6 sparking the worst riots in Greece in decades.
The left-wing Revolutionary Struggle guerrilla group, which surfaced in 2003, also claimed responsibility for shots fired at a police bus in the same month. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
