- Story Text: A car bomb has exploded in western Baghdad, killing two people. Earlier on Monday three car bombs explosions in Baghdad killed 22 and wounded 107. The worst blast was at a petrol station, which killed ten and wounded dozens. A British soldier has died in a roadside blast in Basra, bringing to 100 the number of British soldiers to die since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Multiple bombs which exploded in Baghdad killed at least 24 people and a bomb in Basra killed the 100th British soldier to die in Iraq on Monday (February 5).
A car bomb exploded in a crowded market in southwestern Baghdad on Monday, wounding two civilians, interior ministry source said.
The attack took place in al-Amil district of southwestern Baghdad.
A number of shops were wrecked in the blast.
Earlier in the day three car bombs exploded in Baghdad, killing 24 and wounding 111.
The worst blast, a car bomb targeting a petrol station in the religiously mixed neighbourhood of Saidiya in southern Baghdad, killed 10 people and wounded 62.
The second blast in a vehicle workshop in central Baghdad killed eight people and wounded 40, police said.
"We were in our shops and the car drove in and parked here. People in the garage are Sunnis, Shi'ites, Christians, Kurds and Sabeans," said Hussein, a car mechanic.
In the third blast, a car bomb exploded in a shopping area in Sinaa Street in central Baghdad, killing six people and wounding nine others, police said.
A British soldier was killed on Monday by a roadside bomb in Basra, taking to 100 the number killed in action in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, the Ministry of Defence said.
The attack took place in Bradhi'ya district in central Basra, just metres away from the U.S. Consulate in the city.
Britain has around 6,000 troops in southern Iraq, mostly stationed in and around Basra, the country's second largest city. Its oil wealth is the source of most of Iraq's revenues.
Britain hopes to pull out thousands of troops next year and hand over control of Basra to Iraqi authorities between April and June, although military officials say that is dependent on security conditions on the ground.
The fresh violence comes as U.S. and Iraqi security forces prepare to launch a much-anticipated crackdown in the capital, seen as a last-ditch effort to quell soaring sectarian violence between majority Shi'ites and once dominant Sunni Arabs.
On Saturday (February 3), a suicide truck bomb killed 135 people in a Shi'ite area of Baghdad in the worst single bombing since the U.S.-led 2003 invasion. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
