- Story Text: Surveillance video, released by Israeli police, shows a shooting attack in the old city of Jerusalem during which the attacker was killed and ten other people injured.
Israeli police on Sunday (August 12) released surveillance video which captured a shooting attack in Jerusalem's old city, during which a man grabbed a gun from an Israeli security guard and shot him, sparking a gun battle.
According to police and medics, an Israeli Arab man from northern Israel, was killed and at least 10 others were injured.
The release of the closed-circuit-television (CCTV) footage came after Israeli media reported that the family of the alleged shooter claimed he was not an attacker and demanded a comprehensive probe into the case.
The surveillance footage appears to show Ahmed Khatib, from the Arab village of Kfar Manda in northern Israel, exchanging fire with an Israeli security man until Khatib fell on the ground.
An Israeli police commander described Khatib as a "terrorist", though he did not say what may have motivated the shooting.
The police commander told Israel Radio the man shot the security guard after stealing his gun near a crowded market close to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City's Christian Quarter.
A second security guard chased after the attacker and shot him, the commander said. The police and the Israeli emergency service Zaka said the assailant was killed.
Israeli emergency services said as many as 10 people were injured in the gunfire. Most of the injuries were minor.
The Old City is particularly crowded with shoppers and tourist on Fridays.
One witness told Israel Radio said two security guards shot and killed the assailant.
The police commander said in response that only one guard shot the attacker and that he acted "professionally". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
