- Story Text: Relatives of victims of the latest deadly assault on a Chinese schools were left shocked and confused on Thursday (May 13), trying to understand why a man with a cleaver went beserk in a kindergarten.
Villagers in northwest China's Shaanxi province had watched as an argument erupted between the attacker, Wu Huanming, 48, and Wu Hongying, a 50-year-old woman who ran the kindergarten, over the building's lease.
Huanming hacked five boys and two girls to death with the cleaver, and also killed Hongying and her 80-year-old mother. He then went home and committed suicide, the Xinhua news agency said.
As medics treated 11 wounded children under tight security in hospitals, their families waited for news.
At the Hanzhong Central hospital, the father of one injured child could only say: "I am very very confused right now. I don't know what to say. I am just really confused."
Earlier on Thursday, local health officials announced the toll of dead and wounded, saying five girls and two boys had died.
It was the sixth attack on school children in China since March.
The succession of bloody assaults has prompted officials to demand a show of force to deter such attacks, which have angered the Chinese public and stoked criticism of the government. State media reported on Thursday that some schools were being guarded by police carrying machine guns.
Triggers for the attacks have included pent-up grievances over lost jobs, business failures, broken relationships, and a new home that officials had ordered torn down. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
