- Story Text: A Fatah member is killed in a gunbattle near Erez crossing point between Israel and Gaza. Israel says the man was killed by Hamas fire while the Islamist movement claimed the military is to blame.
At least one Palestinian was killed and another critically wounded in an attack near a main border crossing between Gaza and Israel on Monday (June 18), a Palestinian medical sources said.
Hospital staff said a senior operative of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an offshoot of Abbas's Fatah faction, was killed and another man was critically wounded in a gun battle near Erez crossing, one of the main Gaza crossing points.
Hamas militants said they fired at the Israeli army and that the man was killed by Israeli gun fire. An Israeli army spokesman denied that shots fired from an Israeli lookout, which had also come under attack, caused the death.
He said that a gunman from Gaza sprayed bullets and threw grenades at Palestinians waiting at the crossing and that the death was caused by his actions. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
