- Story Text: A roadside bomb hits a U.S. military convoy in Baquba as Iraqi army arrests two men in Mahmudiya. In Baghdad, a roadside bomb exploded next to a traffic police patrol wounding two people. A roadside bomb exploded next to a US military convoy in the volatile town of Baquba on Tuesday (January 23), setting two US vehicles on fire, Iraqi police said.
They said that the attack took place in al-Tahrir district to the south of the town.
The US forces in the town did not give an immediate report on the incident.
In another attack in Baquba, gunmen kidnapped Kahled al-Sanjari, a local government official in Baquba on Monday (January 22), while he was on his way to work and set the office on fire, police said.
Baquba lies 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Baghdad, is a mixed Sunni and Shi'ite town that has seen heavy insurgent activity.
Meanwhile in Baghdad, a roadside bomb exploded next to a convoy of traffic police in central Baghdad, wounding two people. One of the wounded was a traffic policeman.
"They planted the bomb in this road which is used by civilians. It exploded here, broke the glass of windows and dameged a traffic police patrol. We are unarmed people and we work here to earn our living," said an unidentified eye witness.
Earlier in Baghdad, two car bombs exploded next to civilians, killing three and wounding eight as this attack came a day after deadliest one in Baghdad market that killed 88 people.
In the southern town of Mahmudiya, the Iraqi army said that they have arrested two members of al-Qaeda organisation in Iraq during a raid conducted by the second brigade in the area.
They said that the raid was conducted in the area of al-Rakoub, south of Baghdad and part of what is known as the "triangle of death."
"The fourth brigade of the second division have raided al-Rakoub area at1600 hour and arrested a terrorist group of two men. They had weapons and were hiding in a in a drainage tunnel," said Majid Abdul Hassan, an iraqi soldier.
