- Story Text: Two people were killed and 14 others wounded when two mortar rounds struck the Shi'ite Kadhimiya district of northern Baghdad on Monday (April 21), police said.
One of the mortars hit the Kadhimiya soccer stadium. Another police source said that six people were killed and 22 wounded in the district.
"A mortar round landed in the stadium during training. People were hurt in the attack and some have parts of their body amputated. It is a stadium, it is not a military base or base used by the Americans. The Kadhimiya stadium has been targeted several times ago," said Jassim a witness.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice backed Iraq's crackdown on militias in a visit on Sunday to Baghdad, where the worst fighting in weeks erupted after Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr threatened all-out war.
Rockets blasted the fortified Green Zone compound where Rice met Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and other officials and praised their month-old campaign against Sadr's followers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
