- Story Text: Arsonists attacked a car showroom in northern Athens early on Saturday (March 28) setting fire to luxury Jaguar vehicles using gas canisters and smashing the windows of the showroom.
At least four cars were targetted in the attack as firemen scrambled to put out the blaze.
Police said no one was injured in the attack at the dealership, located on one of Athens' main roads leading to the northern suburbs.
Attacks have been taking place on a continuous basis in Greece for the last four months since angry riots broke out in the country in December.
A series of gas canister attacks have taken place on banks, political offices and large firms. Gas canisters are often used by anarchist groups protesting against the government, capitalism and the establishment, but there have also been more serious bomb and gun attacks against banks, a television station and government buildings.
Violent street riots in December after police shot a teenager unleashed a wave of street clashes with police and the smashing and torching of shops, banks, firms, and political offices.
No one has been injured in the various attacks, although a guerrilla group who claimed responsibility for two recent bomb attacks on banks also shot and seriously injured a police officer in retaliation for the teenagers killing in December.
The riots in December, initially set off by the shooting, then sparked public anger over the government's economic policies and a series of corruption scandals involving government officials. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
