- Story Text: An Iraqi minister survived an apparent assassination attempt in the centre of the capital Baghdad on Tuesday (July 21), police said.
They said that a convoy carrying Iraq's Minister of Water Resources Abdul Latif Rasheed was attacked by a bomb blast on its way to office in the city's central district of Karrada.
Police said that 12 people, including three traffic policemen, were wounded in the attack. Two vehicles in the convoy were slightly damaged in the attack. The bomb did not hurt anyone in the minister's convoy.
U.S. troops pulled out of Iraqi cities and towns on July 30, vacating a number of urban posts, including Sadr City, which lies in the capital's east. Officials say they expect militants to step up attacks to test Iraqi security forces and ahead of national elections scheduled for January.
Violence has fallen sharply across Iraq, but militant groups are still capable of carrying out frequent bomb attacks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
