- Story Text: Witnesses reported on Wednesday (December 6) that heavy fighting broke out in Ramadi, a rebellious city west of Baghdad, and residents said U.S. planes bombed areas in the centre of the city, killing 12 and wounding nine others, doctors and hospitals said.
Residents going through the rubble on Thursday (December 7) found the remnants of a exploded munition.
"At least two families are living in this house. Eight people were wounded, children were among them. This is part of the rocket that was fired by the warplanes (showing remnant of rocket)," said one unidentified eyewitness.
The U.S. military were not available to give an immediate confirmation about the clashes.
Ramadi is the capital of the restive Anbar province, a centre of the Sunni insurgency against U.S. forces. American forces have come under frequent attack in Ramadi, one of the most violent cities in Iraq.
In central Baghdad, a car bomb exploded in central Baghdad on Thursday (December 7), causing no casualties, police and witnesses said.
They said that the car was parked near antiquities shops in Salman Faiq street.
At least three cars were burnt out in the blast that shattered glass of the windows of nearby shops.
Iraq is gripped by tit-for-tat sectarian killings between Shi'ite and Sunnis and many Iraqis fear their oil-rich nation passed the point of no return into sectarian division after the destruction of a Shi'ite shrine in February.
Earlier in eastern Baghdad, mortars hit a residential area in eastern Baghdad on Thursday (December 7), wounding seven civilians, witnesses said.
They said that the attack took place in al-Baladiyat district of eastern Baghdad but it was not clear it that was the intended target. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
