- Story Text: A mortar stike on a refugee camp north of Mogadishu kills eight members of one family.
A mortar strike in Somalia killed eight members of a family at a refugee camp on Sunday (December 30) in the latest bloodshed of fighting between Islamist-led rebels and country's interim government, witnesses said.
Madey Sufi Moalim was buying supplies when the shell landed on the camp north of Mogadishu, killing his pregnant wife, five children, and others.
"Eight people died, five of them are my children, and also my wife was killed by the mortar, while the others were our guests," Moalim said.
In separate incidents, insurgents also clashed with troops in the south of the Somali capital and attacked Ugandan peacekeepers manning the city's strategic K4 junction.
"This shows how the Somali people are always being killed. The two sides are fighting amongst the people and so the people become their victims,"
said Ismail Jumale, a human rights activist.
