- Story Text: A roadside bomb has killed a leader of the neighbourhood patrols, known as the Awakening Council - an alliance of Sunni Arab tribes fighting al Qaeda militants.
Iraqi police say Karim Hamadi, leader of the Awakening Council of Baghdad's southwestern district of Al-Ray and Al-Dowanim was killed by a roadside bomb, which hit his vehicle while driving in the area on Friday (July 4).
Two of his guards were seriously wounded in the attack.
The body of Hamadi was buried on Saturday (July 5) following a funeral procession held in the area and attended by his relatives and friends.
The neighbourhood patrols are credited with helping ease violence in Iraq but they have increasingly come under attack.
Also on Saturday, a roadside bomb exploded as a U.S. military convoy was driving near al-Shaab Stadium in central Baghdad, police said.
The U.S. military could not be immediately reached for a comment on the attack or a report on casualties. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
