- Story Text: A makeshift bomb exploded outside a police inmate transfer centre in the Greek capital on Saturday (March 20) causing damage but no injuries, police said. The bomb was placed under a bus stop in front of the building, damaging the bus stop and nearby windows.
A warning call had been made to a newspaper about 15 minutes before the device went off. The blast also damaged the guard post at the front of the building. Police had stopped traffic on the street and cordoned off the area before the device went off. It was the third incident since Friday. Another makeshift bomb damaged the office of a far-right extreme nationalist group, "Golden Dawn" in central Athens, - which is anti- immigrant - , without hurting anyone. Another timebomb exploded outside the residence of the vice president of the Pakistani immigrants community in Athens early on Saturday, causing only material damage.
Police suspect all three blasts may be related, possibly to the issue of immigrants. The inmate transfer centre is next to an immigrant processing centre.
There has been a series of gas canister and bomb attacks by leftist and anti-establishment groups in Greece since 2008, when police shot a teenager on the street that sparked violent riots. Those have been against the government, police or businesses, but were not immigrant related. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
