- Story Text: Three people were killed and ten injured when mortars landed in a southwestern residential district of Baghdad on Wednesday. At least three people were killed and ten others wounded when mortars landed in a mixed area in southwestern Baghdad on Wednesday (February 21), witnesses and hospital sources said.
The target of the mortar attack was not clear.
An unidentified witness described the attack.
"The first mortar shell landed on us. It damaged the fence of that house (points). We ran away to the main street when the second mortar landed here after two to three minutes. Many mortars landed here, about seven or eight mortars." he said.
Insurgents frequently fire mortars and rockets on residential areas in Baghdad, police stations and army checkpoints.
Iraq is gripped by tit-for-tat sectarian killings between Shi'ite and Sunnis and many Iraqis fear their oil-rich nation passed the point of no return into sectarian division after the destruction of a Shi'ite shrine in February.
