- Story Text: Four policemen were killed and four others wounded when gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint near the centre of Ramadi, 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad on Saturday (November 19), a local police source said.
Gunmen in a vehicle opened fire at a checkpoint in al-Qadissiya al-Thaniya district, five kilometres (1.6 miles) south-east of Ramadi city, killing policemen before escaping, witnesses said.
"The vehicle came from there; I did not see it at first, because it was very fast, after that it stopped here near the checkpoint and gunfire erupted. The sound of the shooting was very loud. Then the vehicle took the road on the left and sped away. Three or four policemen were lying dead on ground," said eyewitness Ahmed Nafe.
Ramadi -- the capital of Anbar, the vast desert province to the west of Baghdad that was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the war -- has seen sectarian tensions in recent days after the killing of 22 mainly Shi'ite pilgrims.
Violence has dropped sharply in Iraq since the peak of sectarian fighting in 2006-07 but bombings and other attacks still occur daily as the army and police battle Sunni insurgents and Shi'ite Muslim militias. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
