- Story Text: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police vehicle, killing three police officers in Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi on Thursday (April 5), police officials said.
Police said, a police vehicle was on routine patrol in Pir Ilahi Bux (PIB) colony neighbourhood in the central part of the city when it came under indiscriminate gunfire, killing all three policemen in the vehicle.
The policemen were rushed to hospital where they died.
"The were on duty at PIB colony area. Unidentified gunmen opened fire at them in which they were martyred," said police officer Asif Khwaja.
The motive of the killing was unclear and police said they would continue their investigations.
A city of more than 18 million, Karachi has a long history of violence, and ethnic, religious and sectarian disputes and political rows can often explode into battles engulfing entire neighbourhoods.
Street thugs and ethnic gangs have been used by political parties as foot soldiers in a turf war in a city which contributes to about two-third of Pakistan's tax revenue and is home to ports, the stock exchange and the central bank.
Over two dozen people have been killed in Karachi over the last week, including policemen. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
