  • Story Text: Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) condemns an attack which targeted a compound of the International Committee of the Red Cross, causing the organisation to suspend its aid activities in Misrata and Benghazi.
    Unknown assailants attacked a compound of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Libyan port of Misrata on Sunday with grenades and rockets, forcing it to suspend its work there and in the eastern city of Benghazi, the agency said.
    The ICRC said seven of its aid workers were inside their residence when it came under attack. No one was hurt, but damage to the building was extensive.
    It was the fifth time in less than three months that violence was directed against the independent aid agency in Libya, the ICRC said in a statement, which stressed its neutrality.
    A spokesman for Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) condemned the attack.

    "We are condemning all violent actions, we condemn any kind of extremism. We are a moderate people and our faith is Islam which is an honour for us," said NTC spokesman Saleh al-Darhoub.
    Several violent incidents have rocked Libya in recent days and included the kidnapping on Tuesday in Benghazi of seven Iranians relief workers who were official guests of the Libyan Red Crescent Association.
    Libya's interim authorities also said in the news conference that they will hand over power to a newly elected congress on Wednesday.

    "We assure that the eighth of August is the official date for transferring power peacefully," said spokesman Saleh al-Darhoub.
