- Story Text: Protesters in Alexandria broke into the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood on Tuesday night (November 27) and tore down and burned the sign that hung on the building.
A small group of protesters that were part of a much larger march of opposition groups angry at what they say is a power grab by Islamist President Mohamed Mursi , broke away and entered the building that houses the Brotherhood HQ.
Over ten thousand marched through Alexandria on Tuesday, on a day that saw anti-Brotherhood demonstrations in cities across Egypt.
Tens of thousands Egyptians protested in Tahrir square in Cairo, the focal point of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
Tuesday's protest called by leftists, liberals and other groups deepened the worst crisis since the Muslim Brotherhood politician was elected in June, and exposed the deep divide between the newly empowered Islamists and their opponents.
In Alexandria protesters who burned the sign over the Brotherhood headquarters then confronted police who came to the scene and threw stones at a police van.
President Mursi last week issued a decree that expanded his powers and barred court challenges to his decisions.
Mursi's administration has defended the decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation.
But opponents say Mursi is behaving like a modern-day pharaoh, an insult levelled at Mubarak - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
