- Story Text: Opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi attacked the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party headquarters in Sharqiya on Wednesday (June 26) following the President's speech.
Opponents are reported to have attacked a peaceful rally by Mursi's supporters who were gathered to listen to his televised address.
Tables and chairs were tipped over and documents were seen on the floor in rooms with broken doors inside the office.
The attackers also set fire to the office's belongings outside the building.
In his speech, Mursi promised to form a committee tasked with proposing amendments to the country's disputed constitution and another to bring about national reconciliation.
But his two-hour address delivered to a room full of his supporters as well as government officials and military personnel did little to appease his opponents, as demonstrators remained steadfast to go through with the planned mass demonstrations on June 30, marking one year since Mursi came to power. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
