- Story Text: Unidentified attackers threw a hand grenade near a political party office on the outskirts of Pakistan's biggest city Karachi, killing at least two people and injuring six others late on Sunday (July 22), local media and party officials said The attack took place near an office of the anti-Taliban secular political party called Awami National Party (ANP) at a low income neighbourhood Gulshan-e-Bunir in the Landhi area of Karachi.
Bashir Jan, a provincial leader of the ANP said a party member and a supporter were killed as a result of the attack.
"After 'tarawih' prayers of Ramadan (evening mass prayer session), our comrades were sitting in the office as usual. Some attackers came down here and opened gunfire and threw a grenade. The damage was not big because it hit the wall. Some of our comrades tried to catch the attackers and chased them. Then they again threw a grenade as a result of which our two comrades Afroz Khan who was our unit official and Ziaullah, who was a sympathiser of the party, both were martyred. Some of the injured were brought here to this hospital, others were taken to another hospital," said the ANP provincial chief of Sindh.
The bodies and injured were rushed to hospital and police said they were investigating the attack.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban have in the past threatened to attack the ANP among other secular parties.
The steamy port city of Karachi is Pakistan's financial heart and home to 18 million people. It typically sees about a dozen murders a day, a deadly combination of political killings, attacks by Taliban and sectarian militant groups, and street crime. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
