- Story Text: Four Palestinians were killed in northern Gaza on Friday (May 26) as Israel fired dozens of artillery shells into the territory to target places from which militants had fired rockets into the Jewish state.
In the latest attack, three Palestinian men died in an explosion inside their house, medics said. Palestinian security sources blamed the blast on Israel. The army denied involvement.
Israel has increased its shellings of north Gaza in recent days while militants in the area have continued to fire rockets into the Jewish state. One rocket launched from the territory landed in an Israeli school last week, causing no casualties.
Palestinian security sources said initial investigation showed the blast in the home, which also wounded five Palestinians, was either caused by a shell fired into it or by one that landed nearby that an occupant accidentally detonated.
Israeli military commander Major Tal Lev-Ran told Reuters the Israeli army had nothing to do with this specific incident. He pressed that Israel does not fire artillery shells toward houses and has no intention of harming civilians.
Lev-Ran suggested the explosion might have been a "work accident," or an accidental premature explosion of a bomb by a militant. Palestinian security sources said the Palestinians killed, who were in their twenties, were all civilians.
Earlier in the day, an Israeli shelling near the area killed a Palestinian farmer, medics said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
