- Story Text: Palestinian militants in Gaza fired three Qassam rockets at southern Israel late on Monday (June 26), wounding four people, as Israeli ground forces massed along the Gaza border, preparing for a possible offensive.
Two rockets landed in open areas in southern Israel and a third struck a power pole in the town of Sderot.
The barrage of rockets came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert threatened a 'comprehensive, sharp and severe Israeli operation' in Gaza.
Troops and armour have begun to mass on Gaza's borders. Tanks were lined up along the border with Gaza, preparing for a possible ground operation.
Israel moved its military forces to Gaza frontier after Palestinian militants raided a military post across Gaza on Sunday (June 26), killing two soldiers and abducting a third.
It was the first such incident since Israel quit the Gaza Strip last year.
Olmert said that Israel has no intention of releasing Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the 19-years-old soldier kidnapped by militants who infiltrated Israel from the Gaza Strip.
Two attackers were shot dead in the raid that militant groups termed a response to the killing of 14 Palestinian civilians in recent Israeli air strikes in Gaza against militants behind cross-border rocket launchings.
Olmert held Hamas, an Islamist group that came to power in March and is heading the Palestinian government, and the Palestinian Authority chaired by President Mahmoud Abbas responsible for Sunday's assault, appearing to dash any chance of talks with the moderate leader soon.
Israel has vowed reprisals that could include a re-invasion of Gaza, a coastal territory it quit last year after 38 years of occupation, or the assassination of leaders of Hamas, a group dedicated to its destruction. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
