- Story Text: Gunmen stormed a bus station north of Baghdad, pulled 24 people from a crowd and then killed most of them before dumping their bound and blindfolded bodies in a village nearby, officials said on Wednesday (July 12) .
The assailants, who had asked for identity cards before taking their victims, fled in seven minibuses after the attack in the town of Miqdadiya, 100 km (60 miles), said Major General Ahmed al-Awad, commander of the 5th Iraqi Army division.
There were conflicting reports as to the sectarian affiliation of the victims, but relatives at the morgue in Baquba said they included both Shi'ites and Sunnis.
Awad said security forces released four of the kidnap victims from a house in a village near Miqdadiya during a search operation, but that the attackers killed the rest.
"We found 20 bodies. They were blindfolded and bound," Awad told Reuters. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
