- Story Text: A car bomb went off near a main courthouse in western Baghdad on Monday (May 8), killing at least five people and wounding 10, an Interior Ministry source said.
"A convoy of patrol vehicle drove from here and the car was parked here. It went off when the convoy drove past," said Jaafar, a student of the Fine Arts Institute, which is close to the site of attack.
Last week, a roadside bomb killed at least nine people and wounded 46 near a courthouse in eastern Baghdad.
The courthouse targeted on Monday is responsible for most cases in the capital's Karkh sector, where there are many insurgent strongholds. Last month, gunmen killed a senior judge who was the head of the Karkh courthouse.
Iraqi courts have passed a string of sentences, including death penalties and life in prison, in recent months against insurgents fighting the U.S.-backed government.
In a separate incident, two civilians were killed and eight others wounded when a roadside bomb placed in a bag went off in the busy square of Al-Tayran in central Baghdad, police said.
"Our Muslim brothers were performing noon prayer when a mercenary atheist put a bag with a bomb inside here and it went off. Our brother here has 7 children and the other has three and that one has two families," said Fadhil, a resident of the area.
Iraqi Security Forces also discovered a weapon cache on Monday (May 9) inside the Mosque of sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Gailani in central Baghdad.
Iraqi security forces cordoned off the area immediately.
The cache included numerous mortars, various mortar parts and weapons carriages.
The weapons were confiscated for future destruction.
Iraqi 2nd brigade army commander Major General Jawad al-Romi examined the area with Iraqi and U.S. forces.
"I went to check the place of the person who is in charge (in the Gailani Islamic school), I found a burned out room with two charred people inside. I also found number of a full made improvised explosives device (IEDs), remote controls used for controlling blasts, grenades, ammunitions and two barrels fill of gunpowder, which is used in such purposes," he said.
Iraqi security forces said they discovered the cache when a blast took place in the school late on Sunday (May 7). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
