- Story Text: Clashes between insurgents and U.S. troops erupted in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi on Saturday (May 13, 2006), killing and wounding several Iraqis, witnesses and police at the city said .
Police and witnesses said that the clashes took place in the Malaab area of Ramadi.
Hospital sources in Ramadi said U.S. forces bombed houses in central Ramadi, killing four civilians and wounding 11. Four cars were destroyed in the clashes.
"U.S. soldiers were here and opened fire on this car then a Jet fighter bombed the area , no one was here, no resistance, no one opened fire on them," an eyewitness said .
Ramadi is a stronghold of Sunni Arab insurgents fighting U.S. and Iraqi forces and the Shi'ite- and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad.
A U.S. soldier was killed when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb in south Baghdad on Saturday, a U.S. military statement said.
In the northern city of Kirkuk, gunmen shot dead an official of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Iraqi president Jalal Talbani's party.
Police said that gunmen opened fire on Kamal Jalal, the PUK official in the town of Huwaija, in al Qadissiyah district southern Kirkuk while he was driving his car on Friday night .
Earlier on Saturday ( May 13) a roadside bomb exploded in central Baghdad targeting an Iraqi army patrol but there were no reports of casualties, Iraqi police said .
The bomb exploded in the Allawi area while Iraqi army vehicles were patrolling the area. Iraqi security forces cordoned off the area immediately after the blast .
Another bomb targeting a U.S. army convoy exploded in Hay el Jamea, in western Baghdad causing damage to some shops at the area , witnesses said .
The U.S. military could not be reached for a word on the attack
Meanwhile a funeral was held in Sadr city slum for five members of the Mehdi Army of Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr who were killed on Friday (May 12) in the mixed Sunni and Shi'ite town of Baquba north of Baghdad.
Witnesses said that unknown people slaughtered the five members of the Mehdi army in Baquba. Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, is a mixed Sunni and Shi'ite town that has seen heavy insurgent activity.
Insurgents are waging a campaign of bombings and shootings in a bid to topple the Iraqi government and drive out U.S. troops. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
