- Story Text: A bomb killed 11 people in a shop selling sweets in the town of Iskindiraya south of Baghdad overnight, Iraqi police said on Sunday (January 28).
The bomb, which had been planted just outside the shop, also wounded five people, the police said.
"We heard the blast and we came running. Not only us but all the people of nearby houses," said a woman who lives near the shop.
Broken bricks were scattered across the area near the shop as blood and pieces of flesh could also be seen.
Police said the blast took place in a mostly Shi'ite area of the town.
Sunni Arab insurgents are waging a campaign of bombings and shootings in a bid to topple the Shi'ite-led government.
In Baghdad, a car bomb, parked on the side of the road exploded as a police commandos vehicle was driving by in a commercial street in the southern neighbourhood of Saydiya, police said.
At least two civilians were wounded and a civilian car was wrecked by the blast.
"There is a car bomb here on the street. The commandos drove by. There were two civilian casualties we do not know the extent of their injuries," said U.S. soldier who was at the site.
Attacks against Iraq's fledgling forces have been relentless as the US military intensifies its efforts to train and equip Iraqis to assume more responsibility for the country's security.
In eastern Baghdad, a car bomb exploded in al-Sina' near a church. There is no report yet on casualties said.
The target of the car, which was parked on the side of the road was not immediately known.
Meanwhile, a car exploded outside the Papal Embassy in central Baghdad, causing no casualties.
Minutes later another car bomb exploded in front of a church in Baghdad's al-Sa'doun street.
Wreckage of the car was scattered over the area as firemen tried to extinguish the fire.
In the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, Two cars bomb at two churches killed at least four people on Sunday (January 29). Nine people were also wounded in the blasts at Santa Maria and Kirkuk churches, a police official said.
In August, a wave of bomb attacks at churches killed 11 people.
Iraq's Christian community, which makes up about three percent of the population, has become increasingly nervous over violence and Islamic militant attacks on Christian-owned liquor shops.
