- Story Text: Angelina Jolie's world premiere of the Disney tale "Maleficent" got second billing on Wednesday (May 28) when partner Brad Pitt was attacked on the red carpet.
Pitt was struck in the face while signing autographs at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood by a man who leapt over a fence to reach the actor, police said.
Pitt was not seriously injured and authorities quickly rushed in to subdue the man. The suspect was arrested for misdemeanor battery and remained in police custody on Wednesday night.
The suspect did not appear to be armed and investigators had not yet interviewed him to determine a motive, Police said.
As to the premiere, "Maleficent" is Disney's modern reimagining of the 1959 animated fairytale "Sleeping Beauty" and Jolie stars as the film's villain, a role she said she enjoyed.
"Everyday the focus was the audience and my children," explained Jolie. "I would think would they find this funny and would they think this is cool and would they think the voice is something they would like or not like. Or is this hat something they like or don't like. It was just the best part of being an actor, my job is to entertain and I will do my best and If I fall on my face and make a fool of myself, I hope that I can do that for people of all ages and especially children."
Directed by Robert Stromburg, the film recounts the untold story of one of Disney's most popular characters, which Jolie seemed perfectly cast for.
"The first few days it was a little awkward trying to get all the pieces together and not trip on these things and not hit my head on the door," laughed Jolie, in discussing her elaborate make up and costume. "But, it was the people who did the makeup, Rick Baker and Tony who were so brilliant that by the time I got out of the make up trailer, my character is half-way there. It was great, I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the horns and I enjoyed the gowns. I had fun."
Jolie's co-star Elle Fanning also had fun, although not at first.
"I was very nervous going into that," Fanning told Reuters. "I mean you hear that name Angelina Jolie, I mean it is so huge. You think she is going to be so intense and scary. Then you meet her and your nerves went away and you realize that she is just a lady. It's crazy to think about that, she is warm and playful and she is very funny."
"Maleficent" opens on Friday (May 30) and is predicted to earn as much as 64 million dollars (USD) during its debut weekend. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
