- Story Text: Streets were covered in debris on Friday (June 6) after a car bomb exploded in the Libyan capital late on Thursday (June 5), slightly wounding a number of civilians and causing heavy damage to a number of houses, according to security sources.
The blast targeted the house of military leader Hashim Basheer, who is in charge of integrating former rebels into security forces, according to media reports.
"We heard a huge explosion around two-thirty in the morning in the area near the house of Hashim Basheer, we are his neighbours. The blast was very strong and I think it echoed as far as Tajura neighbourhood," neighbour Basheer Qadoush said.
The security situation has sharply deteriorated in Libya's capital in the past few months.
Anarchy is spreading in the North African oil-producing country where turmoil and political infighting have reigned since the 2011 uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi. A plethora of armed militias operate at will beyond state authority. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
