- Story Text: Unidentified attackers hurled hand grenade at a police van, killing at least two police officials and injuring one other in Pakistan's biggest city Karachi late on Monday (November 10), police said.
Deputy Inspector General Abdul Khaliq Sheikh said the police mobile van was attacked while on patrol at the crowded main M.A Jinnah road in downtown Karachi.
"The police mobile van was on a routine patrol. It was during rush hour in the evening when vehicles drove very slowly. Two of our Jawans (policemen) were sitting on the back side of the van; an officer and the driver were at the front. A grenade possibly with some chemical was thrown after which the vehicle caught fire. As a result one of our jawans died on the spot, second, who was injured, died later. So, two of our police officers have been martyred and one other is injured, Sheikh told reporters at the crime scene.
Police cordoned off the area and started a search operation but the attackers managed to escape. Rescue teams had moved the bodies and the injured to the Civil Hospital.
In a separate incident in the central district of the city, gunmen killed a policeman injuring one other.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility and police said they were investigating.
Karachi, the nuclear-armed country's key port and home to the stock exchange, have seen attacks by the Taliban and sectarian militant groups. It typically sees about a dozen murders a day, a combination of political killings, and street crime.
Pakistan is fighting a war against militancy in its northwest. Some of the militants are believed to have gone to ground in Pakistan's cities, while others have apparently fanned out into remote mountains and forests.
