- Story Text: A bomb exploded in a crowded market in Baghdad on Saturday (June 17), killing six people and wounding 11, police said.
A witness said the bomb was caused by a bomb placed in a plastic bag in a crowded market in Baghdad's central area of Bab al-Sharji.
"All the people here are poor people who are working to earn their living. We were standing there and suddenly there was an explosion. Many people were killed and wounded. It was caused by a bomb placed in plastic bag," said witness Mehdi Radhi.
In a second attack, a car bomb targeting Iraqi forces in eastern Baghdad killed 11 people, including an Iraqi soldier, and wounded 15, police sources said.
Ambulance and fire engines rushed to the blast site as police sealed off the area.
In a third attack, mortar rounds slammed into a crowded market in Baghdad on Saturday (June 18), killing two people and wounding another 14, police said.
The attack took place in the covered Sarabadi market in the northern Shi'ite district of Kadhimiya. The blast reduced to ashes goods and burnt out a large number of shops.
"We were standing in the middle of the market when the blast happened and people were scattered all over the area and pieces of flesh scattered here. Many of our colleagues were killed including the shopkeeper. The blast was here," said one of the shopkeepers in the market.
In a fourth attack, a bomb on a minibus killed four people and wounded 14 in eastern Baghdad on Saturday (June 18), a police source said.
The blast took place in Baghdad's Shi'ite neighbourhood of al-Ameen.
In a fifth attack, a car bomb exploded near Iraq's National Theatre in central Baghdad, killing one person and wounding five, police said.
In other attacks on Saturday, a car bomb targeting an Iraqi army checkpoint killed seven people and wounded 15 in Mahmudiya, 30 km (20 miles) south of the capital, police said A car bomb targeting a police patrol wounded four people, including three police commandos, in eastern Baghdad, police said.
Saturday's violence came after al Qaeda's new leader in Iraq has vowed to avenge the death of its predecessor Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who has killed in a U.S. air strike last week.
The U.S. military has said it expects the successor to al Qaeda's leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to continue with the same tactics as Zarqawi, killed in a U.S. air strike last week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
