- Story Text: Israeli jets raided Lebanon in the early hours of
Friday morning (May 5), striking at two power stations, a
guerrilla ammunition depot and blowing a crater in the main
highway between Beirut and Damascus.
Israel said its planes had fired on targets in
Lebanon in retaliation for a Hizbollah guerrilla Katyusha
rocket attack on northern Israel on Thursday (May 4) in
which an Israeli soldier was killed.
Israeli raids destroyed one power station at Bsalim and
another at Brital in the Bekaa Valley.Israeli jets also
struck the Beirut-Damascus road near the village of Tenayel,
10 km (6 miles) from the Syrian-Lebanese border and just 100
metres (328 ft) from a Syrian intelligence post.
Witnesses said Israeli warplanes attacked another power
station in Dier Amar, near the northern Palestinian refugee
camp of Beddawi.Israeli jets also flew above Beirut where
they broke the sound barrier.
The raids on Lebanese infrastructure are the second this
year.In February Israel destroyed three power stations,
prompting strong Arab condemnation.
