President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has warned that Israel's Middle East policies could have tragic consequences. Speaking at a session of the National Assembly in Cairo on October 3, which was also attended by Israel's Ambassador, Moshe Sasson, President Mubarak said Israeli policies had endangered hopes of peace and stability in the region. He said the recent Beirut massacres had proved that Israeli occupation could only breed atrocities, crime and bloodshed. The killings, allegedly carried out by Lebanese Christian militia men, caused Egypt to recall its Israeli Ambassador. Reiterating his country's commitment to a negotiated settlement in the Middle East, President Mubarak told the Assembly that President Reagan's latest peace plans could be the basis for a comprehensive settlement. The US proposals have been rejected by Israel and Syria, but conditionally welcomed by Egypt, Jordan and other moderate states. The Assembly later agreed to extend for a year the government's emergency powers first imposed after President Anwar Sadat's assassination last October.
