The Khmer Rouge is preparing to lay seige to Siem Reap, one of Cambodia's largest and most historic cities if United Nations (UN)-sponsored peace talks continue to falter, guerrilla officials said recently.
Prince Norodom Rannariddh, leader of a guerrilla faction loyal to his father, Prince Sihanouk, said the attack could only be prevented if agreement was reached on the UN peace framework.
Equipped for the first time with tanks supplied by China and captured from government forces, the Communist Khmer Rouge would attack Siem Reap when dry season began in a few weeks, according to Rannariddh.
Siem Reap, a town of 70,000 in northwestern Cambodia, is close to Angkor Wat, the 800-year old temple complex considered the symbol of the Cambodia nation.
UN-sponsored peace talks have faltered over final composition of the Supreme National Council, which would end the civil war and govern Cambodia until free elections are held.
