The Polish Catholic Primate, Archbishop Jozef Glemp, has bitterly attacked the government for its banning of the Solidarity trade union. In a service to commemorate the election of Polish-born Pope John Paul II, Archbishop Glemp told the congregation at All Saints Church in Warsaw, that Polish authorities had crushed people's hopes of a national accord. He criticised the ban on the trade union saying it had been done without consultation with the working class people of the country. The service followed a week of demonstrations and protests in response to the outlawing of Solidarity. The Archbishop said the ban -- which came into effect on October 8 -- eliminated the sense of self-esteem for nearly ten million members of the union. He added that the Church in Poland shared the pain and sense of oppression felt by the whole nation, and he quoted Pope John Paul saying Solidarity was part of the very nature of human work. The Polish people themselves were the main hope for the future he said. The packed congregation sang with Archbishop Glemp and raised their hands in the Solidarity salute.
