- Story Text: Khmer Republic Government troops came under attack by communist forces from three sides on the east bank of the Mekong River on Sunday (January 5). The action took place only two miles (just over 3 kms) east of Phnom Penh.
The Government troops were trying to retake positions overrun since fighting erupted early last week. After heavy fighting they were forced to retreat. The communists have been strongly reinforced in the area and are apparently determined to hold the positions which will put them within cannon firing distance of the capital.
The Government has mounted a big offensive in the area. A battalion of the fourth infantry brigade was sent into the area by assault landing craft while T-28 bombers and helicopter gunships gave close support.
The Government troops say they killed more than 100 insurgents in the latest battle ... but have not given casualty figures for their own troops.
