Representatives of El Salvador's government on Tuesday (August 21) condemned leftist guerrillas for launching a new round of attacks during peace negotiations between the two sides in San Jose, the Costa Rican capital.
An army spokesman said four people were killed in the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) attacks outside the capital, San Salvador, and at an army installation in the eastern Usulutan province the previous night.
About 500 guerrillas attacked a national guard army base in Jucuapa, 96 kilometres (61 miles) east of San Salvador, killing one soldier and wounding six.
The government said the attacks were a violation of ground rules for the negotiations drawn up in Venezuela in May, but stopped short of walking out of the talks. An FMLN spokesman countered by saying the guerrillas had not surrendered the right to strike at the army.
The talks ended on Wednesday (August 22) after reaching stalemate on the fate of El Salvador's 55,000-strong armed forces. The rebels have demanded the abolition or a substantial reduction in armed forces prior to a ceasefire agreement.
The United Nations-backed talks have resulted in one accord on human rights in July, but have so far failed to find a formula for ending the 10-year civil ear which has claimed some 75,000 lives.
