Zimbabwe's Prime Minister, Robert Mugabe, has renewed his attacks on his former colleague, Joshua Nkomo, accusing him of being behind a gun attack on his home on June 24. The Prime Minister was speaking at a news conference on July 3 to farewell the visiting Portuguese Prime Minister, Francisco Pinto Balsemao. The Portuguese leader's departure was a colourful affair with lavish entertainment by tribal dancers. But it was Mr. Mugabe's bitter attack on his former colleague that captured the interest. Mr. Mugabe told reporters it was ZAPU (Mr. Nkomo's Zimbabwe African People's Union) that carried out the attack. But whether or not Mr. Nkomo had a direct hand in it would be established by the police. During the incident, gunmen attacked Mr. Mugabe's home, and one of them was killed. He was a former Nkomo guerrilla. Mr. Mugabe and Mr. Nkomo fought together in the bush war against the Rhodesian authorities, but later their collaboration turned to distrust and eventual dislike. In February, Mr. Nkomo was sacked as Home Affairs Minister after arms were found on a farm belonging to one of his supporters.
