Two bombs exploded in the early hours of August 31 in different districts of the French capital, Paris, causing heavy damage and slightly injuring a passer-by. The incidents, in the tenth and twentieth Arrondissements, occurred simultaneously. The Town Hall in Place Gambetta was damaged by the blast, but police and firemen who sorted through the debris found no clues as to the identity of those responsible. The second explosion, in front of another administrative building, caused widespread destruction in the adjoining Rue Pierre Bullet which was littered with wrecked cars and glass debris. Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the blasts. On August 28, the Socialist Party headquarters in Paris and the Defence Ministry were the targets of bomb attacks by the extremist organisation, Action Directe, which demanded the immediate withdrawal of French troops from Chad.
