- Story Text: Residents in Mali's capital Bamako were left shocked after a militant attack that began inside a restaurant early Saturday morning (March 7) left five people dead, including three Malians, one French citizen and a Belgian E.U. security officer.
"The impact was very hard, because it was very "papappapap and boom boom" and the people began to disperse. People went from left to right, some were injured and some died," said witness, Hama N'Goiba.
The restaurant, popular with expatriates, is situated on one of the busiest streets for night life and entertainment in Bamako.
"I went to dance with my friend, when I was my friend, I had seen the guys before and when they returned they began to fire (makes firing noise). They were shooting for four minutes," said Seydou a witness who was at the scene.
The attack began at around 1 a.m. (0100 GMT) and left nine people wounded.
Mali's desert north, where French forces wrested control of territory from separatist rebels and al Qaeda-linked fighters, is plagued by frequent attacks. But this is the first such attack for years in Bamako in the south and raises fears that the capital will become targeted more by militants. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
