- Story Text: Damaged by gun-fire, the South Korean coastguard vessel No 701 was towed into Mokpo Harbour, on the west coast of South Korea, Jan 12, by ROK Navy ship No 72.
A small boat took several casualties ashore from the patrol boat. Her captain, Lee Nam Shik, and two members of her crew were later filmed at Mokpo's Navy hospital.
This followed an announcement, Jan 10, by the South Korean Office of Marine Affairs that petrol vessel 701 had been attacked by more than ten Communist Chinese armed junks in the Yellow Sea off Inchon, South Korea.
Reports from Seoul said one crew member had been killed, two others - including the captain - seriously wounded, and two slightly wounded. It was reported later that one seriously wounded man had also died.
First Officer Chu Pal Yup said at a press conference in Mokpo he took over command of the patrol boat when the captain was injured soon after some 13 armoured vessels opened fire on the 701. The South Korean patrol boat escaped from the attackers after giving a radio message to Pusan headquarters. Six hours later her engines cut out as a result of the damage sustained and her wireless broke down. ROK Navy ship 72 rushed to her aid and took her in tow. Because of extremely rough seas it took over 60 hours to bring the damaged boat into Mokpo Harbour.
