- Story Text: Bosnian Serb forces blasted the headquarters of French United Nations (U.N.) operations in Sarajevo with mortar rounds on Thursday (June 29) in what officials said they considered direct targeting of the United Nations.
Mortar rounds hit the U.N. base at the PTT (post office) building in the west of the city at 9.30 pm (1930 GMT), sending U.N. soldiers and administrators scurrying to their shelters, U.N.
spokesman Major Guy Vinet said on Friday (June 30).
There were no casualties amongst the 200 staff, mainly French soldiers and officers who run Sarajevo area peacekeeping operations.
Vinet said there were two explosions and the base went onto red alert. "Everyone reacted calmly to the attack," he said.
One shell destroyed an upper room and another hit a kitchen area.
On Friday, four civilians were killed and seven badly wounded when mortar rounds fell amongst them in western Sarajevo as they crept from their shelters to shop, hospital officials and witnesses said.
Two rounds fell near an improvised market place close to the main bakery, catching passers-by unawares.
Four people were dead on arrival at local hospitals and doctors said from the severity of the injuries they expected the number of fatalities to rise.
Fierce fighting in the last two days along nearby front lines has kept most Sarajevans at home, too afraid to venture out for supplies or to fetch water from pumps set up after Bosnian Serbs cut off normal pipelines.
Medical workers on Friday evacuated a reporter for Cable News Network (CNN) television and a French United Nations (U.N.) soldier, both wounded in this week's fighting in Sarajevo.
Also on board the special plane was the body of a French U.N.
sldier killed in recent fighting.
