- Story Text: Air, land and sea forces were on standby throughout Lebanon today (16 January) following yesterday's attack by Israeli forces - the first major raid since the 1976 Middle East war.
While the Israeli strikers reported blowing up a complex of Arab commando basses near Sarafand in south Lebanon, only 28 miles. (45 kms) from the Israeli borders, Arab sources said the raid was repulsed. The Arabs claimed the Israelis lost between 15 and 20 casualties killed or wounded, with two commandos killed and six wounded. Israeli reports countered this, saying at least 10 guerrillas were killed and many wounded with six Israeli troops slightly injured.
The Lebanese deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Information, Mr. Ghassan Tweini, said an official complaint about the raid had been lodged with the United Nations Security Council in New York.
