- Story Text: Public Health authorities in Buenos Aires have started a massive eradication programme aimed at the city's unofficial population of 80,000,000 rats. By comparison, there are only 10,000,000 humans in the city.
The problem is wrought to be caused by inadequate sanitary measures in much of the city and the lax application of hygiene regulations. Piles of refuse on the streets make excellent breeding grounds for the rats.
Schools have been closed until 15 March to allow eradication personnel from the municipal authority, the army and labour unions a free hand.
The campaign will cost about $2,000,000 (about GBP860,000 sterling) and will use 15 tons of rat poison, 10,000 litres (2,200 gallons) of fumigating liquid, 2,000 kilos (4,400 pounds) of D.D.T. and 15,000 selective toxic gas cartridges.
