- Story Text: Seven people were wounded just outside the Chechen capital Grozny on Monday (February 12) in an attack on a Russian military ambulance headed for the city's military hospital.
Unidentified attackers fired shots from grenade launchers positioned along the road, wounding seven crew members of the ambulance and seriously damaging the vehicle.
In Moscow on Monday (February 12), former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev called for an urgent meeting between Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Chechen separatist leader Dzhokhar Dudayev, saying the situation in Chechnya required a direct dialogue.
Gorbachev, who like Yeltsin has stopped short of announcing plans to run in a presidential election on June 16, told a news conference that other options for a solution to the Chechen crisis offered by the Kremlin leader and his political foes were not effective.
Yeltsin has acknowledged that the bloodshed in Chechnya, where many thousands of people have been killed since December 1994, is a major obstacle to his re-election in June.
