- Story Text: INTRO: A Palestinian woman has been shot and lightly wounded in a drive-by attack by Jewish settlers near the West Bank town of Hebron.
The attack took place on Wednesday (November 12). Officials at Hebron's Alia hospital said the 50-year-oldwoman, Naziha Abu-Hmeid, was in stable condition after being shot in the leg near Yatta village.
A witness said two settlers shot about ten bullets at him and a group of Palestinians. He said the attackers had long beards and skullcaps and escaped in their car.
Israeli police were not immediately available for comment.
Hebron, holy to Jews and Moslems as the traditional burial place of the biblical patriarch Abraham, is a flashpoint of violence. In February 1994 Baruch Goldstein, a Jew from Kiryat Arba settlement adjacent to Hebron, shot dead 29 Arabs at prayer in the tomb, also known as al-Ibrahimi mosque. Survivors beat him to death.
Israeli and Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) negotiators are locked in talks on a long-delayed Israeli troop redeployment in Hebron.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to modify a Hebron deal signed by Israel's previous government to safeguard 400 Jewish settlers who live in the heart of Hebron among 100,000 Arabs.
Palestinians reject any changes to the deal.
Israeli security officials have said Israel would detain Jewish militants who might try to disrupt the handover of parts of Hebron to Palestinian self-rule.
