- Story Text: Fears of a gas attack like the one on the Tokyo subway in March have prompted Taiwan's defence forces to hold their first ever large-scale chemical gas attack drill on Friday (May 5).
Hundreds of soldiers donned protective clothing and gas masks for the exercise at Taoyuan military base.
The drill simulated a chemical weapons attack on the island and tested the response of the Taiwan military to a subway-style attack on the capital Taipei.
Taiwan's Army Commander-in-Chief, Lt General Tong Chao-yang attended the exercises which featured a mock gas attack on a group of civilians followed by the response, containment and clean-up of the threat by the Army's chemical weapons division.
Ambulances screamed through the streets of the base as masked and armed personnel gave emergency first aid to the victims.
Once the initial threat had been contained, soldiers and trucks moved in to clean the area.
The chemical warfare division of the Taiwan Army held the drill at the request of the Taipei Fire Bureau, which is not equipped to deal with a large scale urban chemical attack.
